Chinese Taipei’s impressive performance at the Li-Ning BWF Sudirman Cup continued when they trounced Germany 5-0 in today’s evening session.
In the Level 1 Group C encounter, Chinese Taipei took full advantage of the absence of Germany’s top singles players Marc Zwiebler and Juliane Schenk. The Germans fielded strong doubles pairs, but Chinese Taipei took the tie without losing a match.
In other action, Korea outclassed Hong Kong China 4-1 (Level 1 Group B); Switzerland and Vietnam whitewashed Kazakhstan and Lithuania respectively (both Level 3 Group B), while France (left; Men’s Doubles pair) overpowered Canada 3-2 (Level 2 Group B).
The Germany-Chinese Taipei tie saw world No. 12 Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels take on world No. 150 Lu Ching Yao/Lai Chia Wen in Mixed Doubles. In a huge upset, the Taipei pair made light of the massive difference in the rankings, edging through in a three-game thriller 13-21 22-20 23-21. Lu and Lai saved one match point in the second game and two in the third game to scramble past the Germans.
The next three matches went to Chinese Taipei in straight games. Hsuan Yi Hsueh beat Dieter Domke (Men’s Singles) 22-20 21-14; Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin outclassed Ingo Kindervater/Johannes Schoettler (Men’s Doubles) 21-18 21-7, and Tai Tzu Ying survived a tough second game against Karin Schnaase (Women’s Singles) 21-15 23-21. The final rubber was again a tight match, with Cheng Wen Hsing/Hsieh Pei Chen surviving a torrid challenge from Birgit Michels/Johanna Golsizewski to emerge victorious 13-21 21-16 21-19 in Women’s Doubles. Chinese Taipei now tops Level 1 Group C, triumphing in both their ties.
Meanwhile, in Level 1 Group B, Hong Kong China got off to a great start against Korea when their Mixed Doubles pair Lee Chun Hei/Chau Hoi Wah (right) upset Asian champions Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na 21-18 21-14. However, Korea shut the door on Hong Kong’s aspirations, winning the next four rubbers. Lee Dong Keun beat Wong Wing Ki (Men’s Singles); Kim Ki Jung/Kim Sa Rang beat Chan Yun Lung/Ng Ka Long (Men’s Doubles); Sung Ji Hyun beat Yip Pui Yin (Women’s Singles), and Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na (featured image) finished things off with a 21-10 21-15 rout of Tse Ying Tsuet/Lok Yan Poon (Women’s Doubles).
