With the smallest squad in the competition, Nepal is embracing the opportunity of competing at their first TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2019 since 1989.

Nepal faced Ireland in Group 3A action on Sunday going down 5-0. Ultimately, the players are hoping to learn from their debut at the tournament.

“This is all our first time playing in the Sudirman Cup and we are here to gain more experience on the world stage,” said men’s and mixed doubles player Dipesh Dhami.

Continuing a family tradition is brother and sister combination Ratnajit Tamang and Nangsal Tamang. Each played singles and doubles matches against Ireland.

“We were inspired to play by our ancestors who played badminton. We enjoy playing and hope the experience of our first Sudirman Cup will help us in the future,” said Ratnajit.

The heavy workload is a factor for the Nepal team with every player required to play two matches.

Coach Uttam Sinkhada said: “The team has been training daily in preparation for this event.

“I will make sure they get the rest they need in between matches as they have a very busy schedule. We hope a team will return in two years’ time.”

Nepal plays New Zealand in their next match on Tuesday.
